One of Zurich's great advantages as a travel base is its central location within Switzerland's superbly efficient rail network. Within ninety minutes, you can reach medieval lakeside towns, thundering waterfalls, and Alpine peaks that look like they belong in a dream. Here are the day trips that make a Zurich visit extraordinary.
Lucerne is the quintessential Swiss experience. Forty-five minutes from Zurich by train, Lucerne sits at the edge of Lake Lucerne, surrounded by mountains. The Chapel Bridge, a 14th-century covered wooden bridge with interior paintings, is Europe's oldest truss bridge and the city's icon. The old town's painted facades on Weinmarkt and Hirschenplatz are beautifully preserved. The Lion Monument, carved into a sandstone cliff, moved Mark Twain to call it the saddest stone in the world. The Richard Wagner Museum in his lakeside villa and the Swiss Transport Museum are excellent.
Mount Pilatus: the dragon mountain. From Lucerne, the Pilatus Golden Round Trip is one of the great excursions in Switzerland. Take a boat across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad, then ride the world's steepest cogwheel railway to the summit at 2,132 metres. The views from the top extend across the Swiss plateau to the Jura mountains and deep into the Alps. Descend by cable car and gondola to Kriens and bus back to Lucerne. The entire circuit takes about five to six hours and is available from May through November.
Rhine Falls: Europe's largest waterfall. Forty-five minutes by train from Zurich, the Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen are not the tallest falls in Europe but they are the most powerful β 600 cubic metres of water per second cascade over a 23-metre drop during summer floods. A boat takes you to the rock in the middle of the falls, where the spray and thunder are extraordinary. The medieval town of Stein am Rhein, further along the Rhine, has some of the best-preserved painted facades in Switzerland and is worth combining with the falls visit.
Jungfraujoch: the Top of Europe. A longer day trip (about four hours each way) but one of the most spectacular railway journeys on Earth. The train climbs from Interlaken through Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, entering a tunnel through the Eiger and Monch mountains before emerging at 3,454 metres β the highest railway station in Europe. The Aletsch Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretches below. The journey itself, through Alpine meadows and past cascading waterfalls, is as impressive as the destination.
Rapperswil and the Zurich Oberland. Known as the Town of Roses, Rapperswil sits on the opposite shore of Lake Zurich and is reachable by train in thirty minutes or β more memorably β by boat in two hours. The castle, the rose gardens, and the lakefront promenade are all delightful. From here, you can continue to the Atzmanni viewpoint above Goldau or take the boat back to Zurich at sunset.
The Appenzell region. An hour and a half east of Zurich, Appenzell is Switzerland at its most traditional. The town's painted houses, the Thursday market with local cheeses and crafts, and the gentle rolling hills dotted with farmhouses and cattle make it feel like stepping into a Swiss postcard. The Ebenalp cable car takes you to cliff-edge trails, a prehistoric cave, and the jaw-dropping Berggasthaus Aescher, a mountain guesthouse built into the rock face of a vertical cliff.
Baden: the thermal spa town. Just twenty minutes from Zurich by train, Baden has been a spa destination since Roman times. The newly renovated Fortyseven wellness centre draws on the natural hot springs that have attracted visitors for two thousand years. The old town, perched above the Limmat river gorge, is charming and uncrowded. The combination of morning thermal baths and an afternoon in Zurich makes for a perfect rest day.
