Madrid is the city that never sleeps β and not in the overused New York sense. Madrilenos genuinely live nocturnally: lunch at 2pm, aperitivo at 8pm, dinner at 10pm, and the streets still humming at 2am on a Tuesday. This rhythm, combined with three of the world's finest art museums, a tapas scene that puts every other city to shame, and an open-hearted warmth that makes strangers feel like old friends, makes Madrid one of the most exhilarating cities in Europe.
The Golden Triangle of Art. Three world-class museums within walking distance of each other make Madrid one of the great art cities. The Prado holds the finest collection of Spanish art in existence β Velazquez's Las Meninas, Goya's Black Paintings, El Greco's tortured saints. The Reina Sofia is home to Picasso's Guernica, arguably the most important painting of the 20th century, alongside Dali and Miro. The Thyssen-Bornemisza fills the gaps with a collection spanning from medieval to pop art. Allow a full day for the Prado alone.
Tapas is not a meal β it is a social ritual. The tradition of ir de tapas (going for tapas) involves moving from bar to bar, ordering one or two small plates at each, standing at the counter, and moving on. In Madrid, this is how evenings work. La Latina neighbourhood, around the Cava Baja, is the epicentre β Casa Lucas, Juana la Loca (their tortilla with caramelised onion is legendary), and Taberna Txakolina for Basque-style pintxos. In Malasana, Bodega de la Ardosa serves one of the finest tortillas in Madrid alongside vermouth on tap.
The Rastro: Sunday ritual. Every Sunday morning, the streets around La Latina become one of Europe's great flea markets. The Rastro runs from Plaza de Cascorro down Ribera de Curtidores and through the surrounding streets, with thousands of stalls selling everything from antiques to vintage clothing to bootleg football shirts. The tradition is to browse until 2pm, then pile into the bars of La Latina for canas (small beers) and tapas. This is Madrid at its most social and joyful.
Malasana and Chueca: the neighbourhood pair. Malasana, centred on Plaza del Dos de Mayo, is Madrid's alternative quarter β vintage shops, record stores, independent cafes, and a bohemian spirit that survives gentrification. Chueca, adjacent, is the city's LGBTQ neighbourhood and one of its most vibrant areas β colourful streets, excellent restaurants, and the Mercado de San Anton food market with a rooftop bar. Together, these neighbourhoods represent contemporary Madrid at its most diverse and welcoming.
The Retiro is Madrid's garden. The Parque del Buen Retiro, 125 hectares in the heart of the city, is where Madrilenos retreat on weekends. The Crystal Palace, a glass pavilion that hosts contemporary art exhibitions, sits beside a lake where you can rent rowing boats. The Rose Garden in May is extraordinary. The tree-lined Paseo del Prado, connecting the Retiro to the art museums, is planted with over a thousand trees and is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape.
Eating like a Madrileno. Beyond tapas, Madrid has its own culinary traditions. A cocido madrileno (chickpea stew served in courses) at La Barraca or Malacatin is a winter essential. Bocadillo de calamares (fried squid sandwich) from Bar El Brillante near Atocha is the definitive Madrid street food. The Mercado de San Miguel near Plaza Mayor is touristy but the quality is high. For contemporary Spanish cuisine, DiverXO (three Michelin stars) is David Munoz's wildly creative flagship, and StreetXO is its affordable street-food sibling.
The night. Madrid's nightlife starts late and ends later. The rooftop bars of Gran Via β Circulo de Bellas Artes has the finest view β are perfect for sunset drinks. The cocktail bars of Malasana and Huertas serve until the early hours. Live flamenco at Casa Patas or Corral de la Moreria is an essential Madrid experience β raw, emotional, and utterly captivating. The clubs of Tribunal and Sol do not fill until 2am and do not close until dawn.
