Amsterdam's canal ring is one of the most beautiful cityscapes in Europe, and no visit is complete without it. But our home city has so much more to offer beyond the Grachtengordel. The Amsterdam we love β and the Amsterdam that will surprise you β exists in the neighbourhoods, courtyards, and waterfronts that most visitors never reach.
The Jordaan is Amsterdam's soul. Originally a working-class neighbourhood, the Jordaan is now the city's most charming quarter. Forget the tourist shops on Damrak β the Jordaan's nine streets (De Negen Straatjes) offer independent boutiques, vintage shops, and specialty stores. On Saturday mornings, the Lindengracht Market runs the full length of the street with local produce, flowers, and street food. The Noordermarkt on Monday mornings specialises in organic and vintage goods. Duck into the hidden courtyards (hofjes) β the Karthuizerhof on Karthuizerstraat is a 17th-century almshouse garden that feels like stepping into a painting.
NDSM Wharf is Amsterdam's creative frontier. A free ferry from Amsterdam Centraal takes you across the IJ river to this former shipyard turned cultural district in fifteen minutes. Huge industrial buildings now house artists' studios, design offices, and event spaces. The monthly weekend flea market at IJ-Hallen is Europe's largest. Street art covers every surface, Pllek serves cocktails on a man-made beach overlooking the city skyline, and the crane hotel Faralda lets you sleep in a converted harbour crane thirty metres above the water.
Amsterdam-Oost is where the food scene lives. The Dappermarkt in Oost (East) is one of the most multicultural markets in Europe β Moroccan spices, Surinamese roti, Turkish bread, and Dutch cheese side by side. Javaplein and Javastraat have become a restaurant strip rivalling anything in the centre but at half the price. The Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics) is one of the most underrated museums in the Netherlands, and the Oosterpark provides a peaceful retreat.
De Pijp is Amsterdam's Latin Quarter. The Albert Cuypmarkt is the flagship, but De Pijp's appeal extends far beyond the market. Sarphatipark is a hidden green gem, the Heineken Experience is nearby for those interested, and the streets around Gerard Doustraat and Frans Halsstraat are packed with restaurants representing every cuisine on the planet. The neighbourhood's mix of Surinamese, Turkish, Moroccan, and Indonesian communities makes it one of the most flavourful areas in the city.
The hidden courtyards (hofjes) are Amsterdam's secret gardens. Scattered throughout the old city, these enclosed gardens were originally built as almshouses for elderly women. The Begijnhof off Spui is the most famous but also the most crowded. Instead, seek out the Claes Claesz Hofje in the Jordaan, the Van Brienenhofje on Prinsengracht, or the Hofje van Wijs on Zeedijk. Each is a pocket of silence in the middle of the city, and most are free to enter respectfully.
Oud-West and the Vondelpark neighbourhood. The streets around the Vondelpark β particularly Overtoom and Kinkerstraat β have transformed into a dining destination. Food Hallen in a converted tram depot serves everything from Vietnamese bao buns to proper Dutch bitterballen under one roof. The Ten Katemarkt is a daily market with the atmosphere of a village square. Oud-West has the energy of De Pijp with fewer tourists.
Waterfront Amsterdam: the Eastern Docklands. The islands of KNSM, Java, and Borneo are a showcase of modern Dutch architecture, built on former harbour land. The walk from Centraal Station along the waterfront to the Muziekgebouw and onwards to the Lloyd Hotel takes you through some of the most innovative urban design in Europe. The Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum) is excellent, and the rooftop bar at the Sir Adam Hotel across the river offers panoramic views.
Amsterdam rewards curiosity. The best experiences here are found by turning down unmarked streets, stepping through hidden doorways, and saying yes to whatever the city offers. At Eutouria, we know every corner of this city β let us show you the Amsterdam that guidebooks miss.
